Home Made Bread

(makes 2 loaves)

Yeast mixture:

 

2 pkgs of Dry Yeast.

1 Tsp. Sugar

1/2 cup of lukewarm water.

 

Put ingredients in a small bowl and cover with plastic film, like Saran Wrap... leave a little hole for the yeast to "breath" and in a warm spot, in the kitchen.

While the yeast is rising, mix in a big bowl:

 

5 cups of flour

1 tbsp of salt

 

Mix dry ingredients.  Make a "well" and add:

 

1/3 cup of shortening

 

Pour 2 cups of hot (tap) water, in the "well".  Let shortening melt.

When the water is cooled down and the shortening has melted or almost all melted, gently dump the "yeast" mixture into the "well".

 

Start gradually mixing and stirring and mixing and stirring until it forms a nice "ball" of dough. 

 

NOTE: Add flour if required.

 

Grease the bowl and the sides of the bowl AND the ball of dough. 

Cover with plastic wrap, leaving a small hole open.

 

Let rise for 1 hour, until dough has risen twice in size.

 

Knead the dough on a floured surface. Divide the dough into 2 loaves.

 

Place in 2 greased bread pans, greasing the surface of the bread dough, once again.

 

Let rise 1 hour.

 

Turn oven on at 375. Put bread in oven. Turn it down to 350 degrees and let the loaves cook for 50 to 60 minutes or until the bread is golden.  You should be able to tap on the bread crust and it sounds hollow.

 

Remove bread from pans, put butter on the loaves to soften the crust and IMMEDIATELY wrap your bread in tea towels until bread has completely cooled, if you want a soft crust.
